The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George L. Cunningham (ASN: 0-2202808), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 September 1950, Lieutenant Cunningham led his platoon to destroy an enemy force which by flank attacks was delaying the company advance near Chinju, Kora. By skillfully deploying his men to the rear of the enemy, he was able to effect a breakthrough of the hostile emplacements. Advancing boldly, despite intense hostile fire, he led the men in overrunning three enemy machine guns, killing ten of the enemy, wounding numerous others and setting to flight the remainder of the force. Lieutenant Cunningham’s gallant leadership and notable tactical skill are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
