The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Lloyd C. Place, Jr. (ASN: 31386198), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. In the afternoon of 20 April 1945, in Almoshof, Germany, Private Place ran 100 yards toward an enemy machine gun and sniper position to liquidate the Germans’ defense. Under heavy machine gun and sniper fire, he dashed into the house where the enemy was located, and with his Thompson sub-machine gun he killed four of the enemy and wounded one, eliminating the German emplacement, and allowing his company to go on to its objective. Private Place was killed in a subsequent action. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
