Headquarters, 8th Armored Division, General Orders No. 30 (May 9, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant James J. Osborne (ASN: 35619027), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 8th Armored Division in Germany from 29 March 1945 to 31 March 1945. When a tank destroyer was hit by enemy fire, Sergeant Osborne left the safety of his own position, and with a one-quarter ton truck, evacuated the wounded crew. He administered first aid until relieved by medical aid men. On the following day he was at an observation post when it was destroyed by a direct hit. Sergeant Osborne was the only one who escaped injury. Alone, he evacuated the commanding officer and all enlisted men. He then took command of the platoon, reorganized it, and secured a new observation post. His courage and devotion to duty were an inspiration to all and reflect great credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
