The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Oscar L. Murphy (ASN: 34887063), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 40th Tank Battalion, 7th Armored Division, in action in Germany, on 29 March 1945. When his tank was hit and put out of action, Private First Class Murphy succeeded in evacuating himself and had moved to safety when he noticed his commander, injured, lay helplessly in the wreckage. Although wounded himself, he unhesitatingly returned to the danger zone and remained in an exposed position, until, together with another man, he was able to carry his comrade from the battlefield. Private First Class Murphy’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 7th Armored Division, and the United States Army.
