The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Chester E. Mroczek (ASN: 16012253), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company **, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. In charge of an under-manned squad that acted as a point for the advance of the company on ** August 1943, at ***** *****, Sicily, Sergeant Mroczek knocked out an enemy outpost and took up an assigned position. He conducted his own reconnaissance venturing within 50 yards of the enemy lines, drawing enemy fire and gaining valuable information concerning the disposition of the enemy. His actions were an inspiration to his men at all times, and Sergeant Mroczek’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
