War Department, General Orders No. 130 (November 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Sherman E. Motley (ASN: 6899531), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Battery A, 60th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft), in action at Fort Frank, Philippine Islands, on or about 21 March 1942. On that date, an enemy shell penetrated a lateral tunnel at Fort Frank and exploded inside the tunnel, causing about 140 casualties, 34 of which were fatal. Corporal Motley voluntarily entered the tunnel during the continued enemy shelling, administered first aid to the wounded, brought in water, food and hot towels, and then assisted in carrying the seriously wounded from the tunnel. His gallant action not only raised the morale of the wounded, but also undoubtedly saved a number of lives. Corporal Motley’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
