The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Carl N. Morrow (ASN: 0-2010894), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 April 1945, in Germany. When his group suddenly encountered a large enemy force while on patrol, Second Lieutenant Morrow ordered his men to remain in place and then gallantly stepped forward alone and engaged the enemy with his automatic weapon. He held his ground despite overwhelming odds until his men had reached a place of safety. Only then did he withdraw himself. Second Lieutenant Morrow’s inspiring heroism enabled the entire patrol to escape almost certain capture. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Morrow, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
