The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Arthur S. Morales (ASN: 39571989), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 14 February 1945. While operating in an open area under heavy fire from enemy machine guns and rifles, Sergeant Morales crawled forward to rescue a seriously wounded companion. Dragging the man to a ledge which afforded some security, he administered first aid, then still under fire, assisted his comrade to a covered position from which medical men could evacuate him to the rear. Staff Sergeant Morales’ gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
