The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant John L. Mims (ASN: 6399787), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Army, in action in Sicily, on 11 July 1943. The courage and skill Sergeant Mims displayed under fire near Gela, Sicily, distinguishes him as an outstanding soldier. Strafed by enemy aircraft and under heavy fire when the Germans counterattacked, Sergeant Mims, driving the Commanding General, Seventh Army, remained loyally at his post and assisted in delivering counterfire against the enemy. The fearless determination he displayed, his initiative and courageous devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
