The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) William Anderson McNulty (ASN: 0-18871), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Headquarters, 301st Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 23 February 1945. Colonel McNulty, after making a personal reconnaissance of the crossing site, fearlessly led the assault elements of his command across the Saar River near Serrig, Germany. Inspiring his men by his gallant leadership, he pressed forward in the face of withering enemy fire and directed the capture of the town of Serrig and the establishment of a vital bridgehead. Colonel McNulty’s utter disregard for his own safety and courageous, aggressive actions reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
