Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 19 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles L. MacDonald, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion of the 1st Cavalry Division, in action at Los Negros Island, Admiralty Group, on 4 March 1944. On that date, our troops occupied a narrow defensive perimeter and because of continuous infiltration and sneak attacks by the enemy, orders required all personnel to remain in their foxholes and fire at any moving object. At 12:45 A.M., at the height of an enemy counterattack, Private First Class MacDonald heard a nearby machine gunner call for additional ammunition. Disregarding the intense enemy fire and his exposure to the fire of friendly troops, he left his foxhole and secured a supply of ammunition which he brought to the machine gun to enable it to remain in action. Thereafter he returned to the dump, secured additional ammunition and again made his way through heavy fire to the gun position where he found the gunner killed at his post. Although the machine gun was the target for concentrated enemy fire and grenades, Private First Class MacDonald unhesitatingly manned the gun and continued it in operation against the enemy, aiding greatly in stemming the enemy attack. Private First Class MacDonald’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
