War Department, General Orders No. 130 (November 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William H. Lowe, Jr. (ASN: 0-1283278), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 2d Infantry Division, in action at Coin-sur-Seille, France, on 20 September 1944. During an attack on this village, Company B was halted temporarily by enemy automatic weapons fire. Lieutenant Lowe, a Platoon Leader, disregarding his personal safety, crawled to the flank of the enemy position and silenced the weapons and killed the crew with a well-placed grenade. His unstinted devotion to duty enabled his company to advance and capture the village. First Lieutenant Lowe’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
