The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Ralph A. Linnemann (ASN: 0-454742), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Gela, Sicily, on 10 July 1943. When a landing craft received a direct hit from enemy planes during a landing operation, First Lieutenant Linnemann courageously proceeded to the aid of the wounded. He swam to the burning ship and, despite heavy enemy fire, assisted in the evacuation of the wounded. First Lieutenant Linnemann’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
