The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Jerome B. Leek (AFSN: AF-20916717), United States Army Air Forces, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Headquarters Battery, 60th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft), Far East Air Force, in action at Breakwater Point, Fort Mills, Corregidor, Philippine Islands, on 2 January 1942. When the roof of a command post caught fire from an enemy bomb, trapping several men underneath, Sergeant Leek, with utter disregard for his own safety, fought the fire, extinguished it, and brought five men out alive. Staff Sergeant Leek’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
