The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Medical Corps) Marion Vorpe Klingler (ASN: 0-419474), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, ** Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On the morning of ** April 1943, when the Command Post was subjected to a severe shelling by enemy artillery, Lieutenant Klingler displayed exceptional gallantry in the presence of the enemy. During the heaviest part of the shelling, three officers and about ten enlisted men were brought into the Battalion Aid Station. While shells were falling within 50 yards of the Aid Station proper, Lieutenant Klingler worked over these wounded men without thought for his own safety. It is believed that this prompt medical attention was directly responsible for saving the lives of two men severely wounded. First Lieutenant Klingler’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
