The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Carol J. Kinnie (ASN: 38441639), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division in the Philippine Islands. When an American soldier was wounded by an enemy ambush near Orioung Pass on 11 June 1945, Sergeant Kinnie led an aid man toward the casualty’s position. Upon arriving at the scene they found that the wounded man was still under intense hostile rifle fire. Private Kinnie immediately borrowed a Browning Automatic Rifle and courageously moved forward, firing the weapon from the hip. He reached the hostile position and killed four Japanese soldiers with a few bursts from his weapon. Sergeant Kinnie’s initiative and heroic action saved the life of his wounded comrade. Sergeant Kinnie’s actions, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, reflecting great credit on himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
