The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Orby L. Kelly (ASN: 16012411), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Cannon Company, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On ** April 1943, in the vicinity of ********, Tunisia, Private First Class Kelly, with Second Lieutenant Norman L. Freeman, rushed to a 30 Caliber machine gun mounted on a one-quarter ton truck and operated the machine gun in the face of eight low-flying ME-109’s and Stukas until he was severely wounded by bomb fragments and machine gun fire from which he later died. Private First Class Kelly’s great courage and devotion to duty which cost him his life reflects the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
