The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Louis Karmis (ASN: 36361124), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Battery C, 951st Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion, in action near Maisen, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 15 February 1945. On that date, Corporal Karmis was a volunteer member of a patrol to locate a small enemy concentration known to be in the area. When the Japanese were cornered in a native grass hut and prepared to fight to the last man, one member of the patrol crawled forward to a more favorable firing position and was shot in the knee. Corporal Karmis, with utter disregard for his personal safety, moved into the open area, under an intense and point-blank fire, to drag the wounded man to safety. Corporal Karmis’ gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
