The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Ralph L. Kapchinske (ASN: 36717266), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 33d Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of Bilbil Mountain, Mountain Province, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 12 April 1945. Private first Class Kapchinske was second scout of the leading platoon of an infantry rifle company which was attacking an enemy held position known as Hill “X”. The only approach to Hill “X” was along a narrow trail on an extremely narrow hog-back ridge. The nature of the terrain was such that not more than three men could advance at one time. While pushing up the trail toward the objective, the first scout was seriously wounded by well-directed enemy rifle fire emanating from several camouflaged spider holes. Private First Class Kapchinske, seeing that the lead scout was wounded, alone, advanced into the face of the enemy fire to assist the wounded man. Although wounded by enemy hand grenades he advanced, killing two of the enemy and holding the ground until men from the rear could come forward and evacuate the wounded man. Private first Class Kapchinske’s bravery and devotion to duty was a source of inspiration to all members of his company.
