The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Clarence J. Johnson (ASN: 0-1311898), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action in Belgium, on 16 January 1945. Lieutenant Johnson’s company, due to ineffective mortar and artillery fire, was stopped by extreme fire from an enemy roadblock. Realizing that the company could not advance without supporting artillery fire, Lieutenant Johnson made his way through a withering storm of fire to a point where the could observe the roadblock and call for artillery fire. As a result of his gallant action, the company took its objective and inflicted severe casualties on the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Johnson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
