War Department, General Orders No. 121 (October 17, 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Jacob J. Johler (ASN: 12002558), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Battery E, 60th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft), in action at Corregidor, Philippine Islands, on 5 and 6 May 1942. During extremely heavy artillery and air bombardment, Technical Sergeant Johler, with complete disregard for his personal safety, assisted in removing casualties under fire. When telephone communications at the battery were shot out, Technical Sergeant Johler voluntarily carried messages to and from the Battery and the seaward defense Command Pos, a distance of about a quarter of a mile, in the dark, over rugged terrain and through intense artillery fire. When very heavy casualties reduced the effective strength of the Battery, Technical Sergeant Johler, though a motor mechanic who had no training on guns, voluntarily took over the hazardous position of chief of breech, a duty which required him to fire the gun while the other members of the gun crew took cover. Technical Sergeant Johler continued to function at this post until he received shrapnel wounds in the arm and body. He then assisted in caring for and evacuating the more seriously wounded. Technical Sergeant Johler’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
