The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Cavalry) Francis A. Jerrett (ASN: 0-2035948), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Cavalry Division, at ********, on 3 February 1945. During the fierce fighting around the Far Eastern University, Lieutenant Jerrett’s troop, together with service elements of the squadron task force entering ******, was separated from the main body. For over three hours these forces were subjected to the enemy’s wither cross fire of machine gun and grenades. During the early phase of this severe fighting Lieutenant Jerrett voluntarily left his position of comparative safety to cross several hundred yards of open street completely dominated by the fire of the enemy to make liaison with approaching support units. Upon returning from his successful mission, Lieutenant Jerrett was severely wounded, one leg being rendered entirely useless, and after reaching the safety of his troop’s position he found himself to be in command. By an inspiring display of courage and fortitude he directed the troop with skill and success until rendered unconscious through loss of blood. First Lieutenant Jerrett’s heroic and courageous action was definitely a contributing factor to the ultimate success of our forces and his extraordinary devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest standards and traditions of the military service.
