The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Edmund W. Hughes (ASN: 0-1319112), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Platoon Leader in Company G, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 February 1945, in the vicinity of Hockenukirchen, Germany. During an attack on this village, Company G was halted temporarily by enemy fire. Lieutenant Hughes, disregarding his personal safety while others were seeking cover, stayed on his feet and inspired his men to continue their attack. His unstinting devotion to duty, gallant action, and enthusiasm inspired the men of his battalion to rush into battle and take this village with a minimum of casualties. First Lieutenant Hughes’ gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
