The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Thomas R. Height (ASN: 32067744), United States Army, for gallantry in action under heavy and almost continuous enemy artillery fire. Sergeant Height assumed the responsibility of the Battalion Forward Observer, who had left the immediate area in an effort to locate the source of artillery fire observed in the vicinity. He continued to adjust the fire of the battalion and brought the fire of the entire battalion upon an important enemy assembly area, dispersing personnel and vehicles, and causing an undetermined amount of damage to material, whereupon the enemy was forced to evacuate the position. Sergeant Height’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
