The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George R. Hardin (ASN: 36401966), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Headquarters and Service Company, 87th Engineer Heavy Pontoon Battalion, in Germany. During a storm crossing of the Saar River at Serrig, Germany, on 24 February 1945, Private Hardin voluntarily took an infantry support raft across the river under intense fire. His personal bravery made possible the landing of critical supplies for the Infantry established on the far shore. His heroic and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
