    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Jack F. Hanika (ASN: 36874692), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the Medical Detachment, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 24 February 1945. in the vicinity of Bubingen, Germany. Technician Fifth Grade Hanika, Aidman of an Infantry platoon, disregarding the hazards of a Schu-mine field, intense artillery and mortar fire, crossed this area on two occasions to administer first aid to the wounded soldiers. His courageous actions were responsible for saving the lives of these men, and his outstanding gallantry is in accord with the highest traditions of the Medical Corps and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
