The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Edward Greenberg, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with a Field Artillery Battalion in Tunisia, North Africa. On three separate occasions during a period of 11 hours, the Command Post at which Sergeant Greenberg was working was bombed and on one occasion a hand grenade, thrown from a plane, destroyed a vehicle in the Command Post. In spite of this enemy action, Sergeant Greenberg maintained steady composure and ably assisted in conducting fire. With complete disregard for his personal safety he remained at his post during these attacks. Staff Sergeant Greenberg’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
