War Department, General Orders No. 69 (July 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Coast Artillery Corps) [then Second Lieutenant] Leonard Goldsmith (ASN: 0-890514), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Battery E, 60th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft), in action at Fort Mills, Philippine Islands, on 5 to 5 May 1942. When the power plant of a battery was destroyed by enemy fire, Lieutenant Goldsmith courageously secured another and drove with it through a heavy enemy artillery concentration. On a subsequent occasion, he left the safety of his covered position to assist in the removal of the wounded. First Lieutenant Goldsmith’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
