The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ray J. Glaze (ASN: 0-455156), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, ** Ranger Battalion, on ** July 1943, south of ***, Sicily. Lieutenant Glaze, an occupant of a car in a column of vehicles traveling south on the *** road, was overtaken and attacked by enemy light tanks. Disregarding his own safety while under heavy cannon and machine gun fire he assisted in removing the wounded to safety. Lieutenant Glaze, then observing the enemy attempting to drive away the only remaining vehicle in operating condition, did by means of rifle fire kill or wound a number of the enemy. Second Lieutenant Glaze’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States military forces, reflecting great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
