The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Homer E. Gilley (ASN: 0-1294408), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Saipan, Mariana Islands, from 8 June 1944 to 7 July 1944. During this period, Lieutenant Gilley crawled across an open field while under heavy enemy machine gun and mortar fire and recovered a vehicle believed to contain maps that would prove valuable to the enemy. As he drove the vehicle across the field an enemy machine gun punctured the front tire and put holes in the radiator. Later in the campaign while under hostile rifle and machine gun fire, he successfully evacuated five of our casualties from within a hundred yards of the enemy lines. Second Lieutenant Gilley’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
