The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Homer L. Gayhart (ASN: 34490020), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Battery A, 80th Airborne Anti-Aircraft Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 8 June 1944, at Ste Mere Eglise, France. Private First Class Gayhart, driver, Anti-Tank Battery, towed a 57-mm. anti-tank gun to a forward position and occupied it without assistance. The enemy commenced a concerted counterattack, but Private First Class Gayhart refused to quit his vehicle or take cover. When the developing enemy counterattack threatened the anti-tank gun position, Private First Class Gayhart again moved the gun single-handed to an alternate position under fire, and was seriously wounded. Private First Class Gayhart’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 82d Airborne Division, and the United States Army.
