The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lloyd E. Finch (ASN: 35542576), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 11th Airborne Division, in action against the enemy on Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 27 April 1945. During an attack against the enemy, the leader of the squad of which Private First Class Finch was a member, was wounded. Private First Class Finch immediately assumed command of the squad and skillfully maneuvered it out of the lanes of fire. While leading an assault, this intrepid soldier was wounded, but he continued to participate in the attack, and single-handedly charged two enemy machine gun nests and destroyed them with hand grenades. Inspired by his heroic actions, the squad pressed a vigorous attack and succeeded in eliminating the strongpoint of enemy resistance, thus enabling the company to advance and seize its objective. The courageous initiative and outstanding leadership displayed by Private First Class Finch during this action contributed materially to the success of his company’s attack.
