Headquarters, Philippine Coast Artillery Command, General Orders No. 22 (April 9, 1942)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Coast Artillery Corps) Stephen Charles Farris (ASN: 0-22022), United States Army, for gallantry in action while Commanding Battery C, 92d Coast Artillery Regiment, Philippine Scouts, in action at Fort Mills, Philippine Islands, on 25 March 1942. During the course of a heavy bombing attack by enemy planes on Fort Mills, when a large barracks in the Kindley Field area was set afire, Captain Farris, voluntarily and without regard for his personal safety, left a place of shelter and aided in fighting the fire, during which time ammunition was exploding in the area and two flights of planes dropped several strings of bombs on the island. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Farris, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
