The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George R. Dunlap (ASN: 34809333), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division in the Philippine Islands. On 13 February 1945, Private Dunlap’s squad was attacking strongly fortified positions along the Binuangan River in the Malinta Area when it encountered intense hostile fire, which forced the squad to withdraw, leaving one seriously wounded man behind. Private First Class Dunlap volunteered to go to the assistance of his comrade. Crawling forward under a hail of Japanese fire, he successfully reached the casualty’s position, only to find him already dead. Although the hostile fire directed at him became more intense, Private First Class Dunlap started crawling back with the body of the deceased soldier. With great effort he moved the man, dragging him a few inches at a time until he finally reached cover. Private First Class Dunlap’s courageous action was an inspiration to the men of his company and were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, reflecting great credit on himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
