The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George W. Dowdle (ASN: 39885560), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 14th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Command, in action at Morotai, Netherlands East Indies, on 9 November 1944. With utter disregard for his own safety while his multiple machine gun mount was under direct attack by a Japanese bomber, Private First Class Dowdle continued to fire at his diving target until it crashed into several B-25s, loaded with 1,000-pound bombs. In spite of this additional danger from exploding ammunition in the wreckage, Private First Class Dowdle remained at his guns expecting another sneak attack. Private First Class Dowdle’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
