The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Howard G. DeBoard (ASN: 35462635), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in Luxembourg, on 25 December 1944, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States. On 25 December 1944, Private First Class DeBoard, an infantry company truck driver, received severe wounds in the face and arms as the result of heavy enemy artillery fire near Heiderscheid, Luxembourg. Despite his own painful condition, disregarding personal safety, he picked up a more gravely wounded comrade and, carrying him several hundred yards under fire to the truck, drove to the nearest aid station, thereby helping to save the life of his fellow soldier. The bravery, determination, and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Private First Class DeBoard are commensurate with the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
