The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Coast Artillery Corps) Harry J. Dawe (ASN: 0-401480), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery K, 59th Coast Artillery Regiment, in action against the enemy on Corregidor, Philippine Islands. On 25 March 1942, Lieutenant Dawe, upon receiving information that a bomb had set fire to a 75-mm. ammunition dump, picked up burning boxes of 75-mm. ammunition and threw them over the cliff into the water below. Lieutenant Dawe, with disregard of his own personal safety, remained at the dump until all burning boxes of ammunition had been removed. His gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
