The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold H. Clark (ASN: 0-381979), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 31st Tank Battalion, 7th Armored Division, in action in the area of Deekenbach, Germany, on 28 March 1945. Lieutenant Clark led his small force of tanks in a daring advance into the town of Deekenbach. Overrunning first defenses despite strong resistance, he fell on an enemy supply column and cannon-supported infantry. Although he had only four tanks Lieutenant Clark quickly cut the column to ribbons. When the turret of his vehicle jammed, restricting his cannon’s zone of fire, Lieutenant Clark exposed himself atop his tank to fire his carbine at the Germans. By his swift and courageous action in carrying the fight home to the enemy He completely disorganized hostile forces, destroying many vehicles and seizing three hundred prisoners. First Lieutenant Clark’s gallant leadership and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 7th Armored Division, and the United States Army.
