Headquarters, 1st Armored Division, General Orders No. 22 (1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant David R. Clark, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with a Field Artillery Battalion of the 1st Armored Division. Sergeant Clark’s battery was suddenly attacked by an enemy force of tanks, mechanized infantry, and anti-tank guns. In withdrawing from the area, his vehicle became stuck in a marsh. When the driver was unable to extricate it, and all the crew left, he got in the vehicle and under heavy enemy fire drove it out of the marsh. The vehicle then received a direct hit from an 88-mm. anti-tank gun and shortly thereafter another one which set the vehicle afire. Sergeant Clark continued to try to bring the vehicle to safety. A third direct hit from an anti-tank gun finally stopped the burning vehicle, knocking him out of it. He was then forced to abandon the vehicle. Sergeant Clark’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
