Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 126 (June 1, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Bruce M. Casey (ASN: 0-1051900), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Company K, 274th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division, in action in France, on 3 March 1945. On that date, Lieutenant Casey led his infantry company against strong enemy positions near Stiring Wendel, France. Completely disregarding his own safety, he heroically braved intense artillery, mortar, and small arms fire, encouraging and inspiring his men by his bold, fearless leadership. As the company advanced, Lieutenant Casey was severely wounded but refused to be evacuated and continued to direct his men by telephone and messenger. Inspired by his devotion to duty the company smashed through its objective. The courageous determination displayed by First Lieutenant Casey was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
