Headquarters, 27th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 49 (July 29, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John Cameron (ASN: 0-1312660), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 3 July 1944. On that date, as Lieutenant Cameron was reorganizing his anti-sniper patrol, it drew fire from a nearby hill. Lieutenant Cameron went to the aid of a sergeant who had been wounded. While rendering first aid, he was wounded himself. Seeing that his patrol was pinned down by fire from enemy tanks concealed nearby, he made his way back to the road where he summoned aid. Lieutenant Cameron died the following day of wounds sustained in this action. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
