The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Richard D. Bush, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Armored Division. Lieutenant Bush was the Forward Observer for a tank battalion. In working his way well forward so that he could observe to better advantage and more effectively direct the fire of his own artillery, he completely disregarded his own welfare by remaining at his post while under very heavy enemy artillery fire. When it began to get dark he again worked his way forward to a position between the enemy and our most advanced troops so he could adjust the artillery fire after dark. First Lieutenant Bush’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
