The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Phillip E. Bost (ASN: 15101354), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 7th Armored Division, in action in Holland, from 2 to 5 October 1944. When the platoon leader was killed, Technical Sergeant Bost took command during a fierce battle in the woods. While his men were immobilized for four hours he treated and evacuated the casualties with no regard for his own safety. Moving into a defensive position late that same day, Technical Sergeant Bost deployed the squads skillfully, obtaining maximum firepower from the depleted platoon. During four days of savage German counterattacks, with the men at times in hand-to-hand combat, Technical Sergeant Bost’s high courage and leadership inspired them to resist and hold their position. Technical Sergeant Bost’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 7th Armored Division, and the United States Army.
