Headquarters, 24th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 29 (December 5, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private James B. Bagley, Jr. (ASN: 35893823), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division at Palo, Leyte, Philippine Islands on 22 October 1944. Private Bagley was number two gunner in a position which was attacked by an undetermined number of Japanese soldiers. Most of the rifle protection was drawn away from the position by enemy fire. When the Japs attacked, Private Bagley remained with the gun and continued o fire on the attacking force. He was wounded by rifle fire and grenades, but he kept the gun in action against the enemy. When he could no longer operate the gun because of his wounds, he remained with his rifle to protect the gun position. Private Bagley’s extraordinary heroism reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
