The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Arthur E. Ashley (ASN: 0-35235955), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 23 January 1945. Lieutenant Ashley, leader of the forward elements of a patrol engaged in a fire fight with the enemy near San Felipe, noticed an enemy machine gun being set up to the platoon’s left rear. Disregarding his own safety and the strong enemy machine gun and rifle fire, he crawled forty yards to within striking distance, killed the gunner and captured his weapon. First Lieutenant Ashley’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
