The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Clyde Artis, Jr. (ASN: 35654603), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 8th Armored Division in Germany on 11 April 1945. Sergeant Artis dismounted from his tank under intense enemy fire. He went to the aid of a tank crew whose vehicle was in flames. Sergeant Artis removed exploding ammunition from the tank and fought the flames until they were extinguished. His actions made it possible to give aid to wounded crew members and reflect great credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
