The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Clifford R. Arnold (ASN: 6977999), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Battery H, 60th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti Aircraft), in action at Corregidor, Philippine Islands, on 3 May 1942. When the anti-aircraft gun Private First Class Arnold manned was put out of action during the final furious enemy onslaught against American forces on Corregidor, Private First Class Arnold left the safety of his gun emplacement and went to another, more exposed, gun. There he fired at an enemy dive bomber until he fell, mortally wounded. Private First Class Arnold’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
