The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Lynden E. Thomason (AFSN: AO-2093941), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on 14 and 15 January 1951. First Lieutenant Thomason, as pilot of an unarmed and highly vulnerable H-5 type aircraft, displayed outstanding airmanship by flying ammunition and bandages to the Special Aviation Group what was cut off and surrounded by enemy forces and returning with critically wounded personnel. First Lieutenant Thomason flew to the area of Chongong-ni, Korea, to evacuate critically wounded personnel to a hospital. Upon arriving at his destination enemy small arms and machine gun fire was directed at him as he landed amidst heavy enemy mortar fire to direct Navy fighters on their strafing and bombing of the enemy positions. First Lieutenant Thomason was informed that the Special Aviation Group was short of ammunition and bandages. On his return flights, First Lieutenant Thomason used his aircraft to fly in ammunition and bandages. Eight critically wounded soldiers were evacuated to safety. First Lieutenant Thomason fearlessly flew through enemy fire, fully aware that he and his frail aircraft was being directly fired upon by the enemy. First Lieutenant Thomason’s outstanding courage and devotion to duty without regard for his own personal safety reflects great credit upon himself and the united State Air Force, and is in keeping with the highest traditions of military service.
