Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 156 (November 16, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Ernest E. Talbot (ASN: 0-2033711), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company E, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, on 11 September 1950, near Waegwan, Korea. When his company, counterattacking a numerical superior enemy, was pinned down by intense enemy mortar and machine gun fire, Lieutenant Talbot, as platoon leader, displayed fearless leadership and extreme devotion to duty in encouraging his platoon in their assigned mission. With inspirational courage while constantly exposed to the intense enemy fire, Lieutenant Talbot, with disregard for his own personal safety, moved from one squad to another shouting encouragement and directions. Though wounded by enemy fire he refused to be evacuated and continued to lead his platoon forward until their objective had been reached. Only then did he seek medical attention. Due to this inspired and determined attack, the enemy was routed from their position suffering many casualties and his company was enabled to successfully complete its combat mission. Lieutenant Talbot’s outstanding leadership in keeping the assault moving, greatly minimized the number of casualties to Company E personnel, and his conspicuous gallantry reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
