Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 71 (April 1, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Robert W. Sweeney (ASN: RA-14015916), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Battery D, 82d Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (Self Propelled), 2d Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of Haktam-ni, Korea, on 12 February 1951. On that date, in the absence of an officer, Master Sergeant Sweeney assumed command of an anti-aircraft firing vehicle and led a convoy through an enemy roadblock. Despite the heavy enemy small arms, machine gun and mortar fire, he maintained an extremely exposed position on the outside of the armored vehicle in order to fire the forward .30 caliber machine gun, and direct the fire of the 40-mm. guns. When the 40-mm. guns could not be depressed far enough to fire on two enemy machine gun positions, he calmly remained in position and, with his .30 caliber machine gun, succeeded in destroying the enemy position. Master Sergeant Sweeney’s gallant and inspiring actions, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
